Liverpool Magic: How to Make the Most of a Rainy 1-Day Visit to the City

Even if i’m not a fan of rain and just spent less than 24 hours in Liverpool. we really enjoyed the stop here on our way to Santa Home in Lapland. So after a 3.5 hour flight from Bucharest we reached the Scouse Capital on a dodgy Sunday.

Restful Evening

Quite late in the day, we took an Uber and headed to our Airbnb. On the way, I had an interesting conversation with our driver, who turned out to be Nigerian. The main topics? Obviously, football and politics—what else?

About 1.5 hour later we found ourselves enjoying some Italian Cusine at Bocconcini Restaurant, after some research over Google Maps, my fellow traveler. For our siesta, we took a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood before calling it a night, knowing the next day would be packed with activities and another flight.

The Walking City

After a restful night, we woke up early to make the most of the day, even though the weather wasn’t at its best.

Liverpool is a city that effortlessly blends history, culture, and charm, and our day exploring its streets and landmarks was nothing short of magical. We started by leaving our luggage at the hotel reception since our flight was scheduled for later in the afternoon. With nothing weighing us down, we set off to soak up as much of the city as possible.

Our walk began on Berry Street, taking us past the hauntingly beautiful St. Luke’s Bombed Church. This roofless monument, a reminder of the resilience of the city after World War II, stood tall with its gothic arches and somber history. From there, we headed to Bold Street Coffee for breakfast, where we treated ourselves to a steaming flat white and delicious avocado toast—a perfect start to a busy day ahead.
Re-energized, we continued on foot toward Liverpool Cathedral, one of the city’s most impressive landmarks. This magnificent structure, a masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture, is awe-inspiring in its scale and detail. The towering nave and intricate stained-glass windows were breathtaking, and the panoramic views from the tower were well worth the climb for those feeling adventurous.

From the cathedral, we made our way to the famous docks. The bustling waterfront and the Albert Dock area came alive with activity, and for a brief moment, the sun peeked through the clouds, casting a golden glow over the Mersey River. It felt like a small blessing on an otherwise overcast day.
No trip to Liverpool would be complete without visiting the iconic Beatles Statues near the waterfront. These larger-than-life sculptures pay tribute to the Fab Four, and naturally, we couldn’t resist snapping a few playful photos with them. It’s impossible not to feel the infectious energy of Liverpool’s musical legacy while standing there.

Our walk then took us to Our Lady and St. Nicholas Churchyard, a peaceful spot known as the sailors’ church. It offered a serene break from the city’s hustle and bustle, steeped in history and a nod to Liverpool’s rich maritime past.

To wrap up our exploration, we stopped at Jurgen’s Sports Bar, a haven for Liverpool FC fans. The vibrant atmosphere, brimming with memorabilia honoring the city’s beloved football team, was the perfect way to end our tour of the city. Of course, we couldn’t leave without taking a photo to capture the moment.

From there, it was time to head back to our hotel, grab our luggage, and make our way to the airport. Our day in Liverpool was packed with history, culture, and fun, leaving us with incredible memories and a strong desire to return to this vibrant and welcoming city. Liverpool truly has something for everyone, whether you’re a history buff, a music lover, or simply someone looking to explore a city with a unique soul.
